The Special Issue of Journal of Islamic History (JIH), Volume 6, Number 1 Special Issue (2026) is published through a collaboration between the Journal of Islamic History and the Faculty of Sharia, Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Raden Mas Said Surakarta, Indonesia, under the theme “Islamic Legal History.” This collaboration represents a scholarly initiative to promote and strengthen the application of historical methods in Islamic legal studies in Indonesia. It seeks to encourage a historical approach to understanding the development, transformation, and dynamics of Islamic law in relation to social traditions, cultural practices, political authority, and state legal systems.

This issue brings together seven scholarly articles exploring diverse dimensions of Islamic history, law, and intellectual traditions. The contributions examine marriage controversies within the Surakarta Sunanate, the transformation of local religious traditions and civil rights, the historical development of Islamic marriage law, the negotiation between Javanese cultural practices and Islamic piety, Muslim marriage under Dutch colonial legal administration, and the Islamization of calendrical systems in seventeenth-century Java. In addition, this issue explores the deconstruction of astronomical history through competing claims concerning the figures of Prophet Idris (AS) and Unusy in Islamic astronomical historiography.

Collectively, these contributions demonstrate the significance of historical inquiry in examining the relationship between Islamic legal thought, local traditions, cultural practices, political authority, and the development of Islamic intellectual knowledge. By bringing together legal, social, cultural, and intellectual historical perspectives, this Special Issue seeks to broaden interdisciplinary approaches to Islamic studies while positioning historical methods as an important analytical framework for understanding the formation, interpretation, and transformation of Islamic knowledge and institutions in Indonesia and the wider Islamic world.
