Abstract

Background: This study aims to analyze the relationship between occupational heat exposure in kitchen practicum laboratories and menstrual cycle duration among Culinary Arts students at Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP). Repeated exposure to stoves and ovens during practicum activities is suspected of disrupting reproductive hormone regulation.

Method: A quantitative observational-analytic study with a cross-sectional design was conducted. The sample consisted of 47 active female students, comprising Semester 4 (n = 15) and Semester 6 (n = 32), selected through stratified random sampling. Primary data were collected using a structured questionnaire via Google Form and analyzed univariately and bivariately using the Chi-Square test.

Result: Results showed that 53.2% of students experienced menstrual cycle disturbance during the last three months of following the practicum, and 76.6% reported that their dysmenorrhea intensity was noticeably worsened by heat exposure in the kitchen. The bivariate test between semester level and cycle duration variability yielded p = 0.905 (p > 0.05), indicating no significant relationship between semester level and menstrual cycle duration.

Implication: Thermal stress from kitchen practicum poses a risk of disrupting hormonal regulation and worsening menstrual pain uniformly across cohorts, regardless of year level, so students are advised to maintain adequate hydration throughout practicum sessions.

Novelty: This study empirically reveals the association between accumulated occupational heat exposure in kitchen practicum and menstrual cycle regulation as well as dysmenorrhea intensity among Culinary Arts students, an occupational reproductive health aspect that remains rarely studied within Indonesian vocational education.
