Abstract

This study aims to analyze the information-seeking behavior of students from remote and underdeveloped (3T) areas at Bengkulu University, focusing on their information needs, the information sources they use, and the challenges they face in searching for and utilizing information in the library. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach, conducting interviews with 10 students from rural areas. Data were analyzed through a coding process to identify themes and patterns in information-seeking behavior. The results indicate that students’ information needs extend beyond coursework, assignments, exams, books, and journals to include housing, transportation, scholarships, the campus environment, student organizations, local culture, and daily life. Students use a hybrid mix of information sources, including Google, social media, upperclassmen, friends, family, professors, study groups, and the library. Major barriers include limited knowledge of library services, difficulty locating collections and accessing electronic journals, limited search skills, a reluctance to ask for help, and the physical distance to the library. The findings indicate that geographic distance can translate into informational and social distance in the experiences of 3T students.
